…Warns Against Extortion by State Officials
The Nigeria Democratic Congress (NDC) has declared that the registration of support groups affiliated with the party is free of charge, warning party officials against demanding money from groups seeking formal recognition.
In a statement issued on Friday by its National Publicity Secretary, Osa Director Esq., the party said it had received reports that some state Chairmen were collecting registration fees from support groups, a practice it described as unauthorised.
The NDC clarified that the registration of support groups does not attract any fee and remains the exclusive responsibility of the party’s Directorate of Support Groups at its National Headquarters in Abuja.
According to the statement, no state chapter, officer, or official of the party has been authorised to register support groups or collect money for that purpose under any guise.
“The registration of support groups is free. It does not attract any fee whatsoever,” the party stated.
It further directed all inquiries and registration matters to be handled solely by the Directorate of Support Groups, stressing that state chapters must comply strictly with the directive.
The party warned that any official found violating the directive would face disciplinary action in line with the provisions of the party’s constitution.
“Any violation of this directive will attract appropriate disciplinary action in accordance with the constitution of the party,” the statement added.
The NDC also reaffirmed its commitment to working with its various support groups across the country, describing them as critical partners in its political activities and electoral ambitions.
It specifically acknowledged the contributions of the Obidient and Kwankwasiya Movements, assuring them of continued cooperation and support.
“The NDC cherishes the support and partnership of all support groups, including the Obidient and Kwankwasiya Movements, and will continue to create an enabling environment for them to work for the victory of the party at all levels,” the statement said.
The directive is seen as part of efforts by the party’s national leadership to streamline the operations of support groups and prevent unauthorised fundraising ahead of preparations for future electoral activities.
