The People’s Democratic Party (PDP) in Bayelsa State has criticised the state government’s 30th anniversary celebrations, describing the elaborate festivities as insensitive to the economic hardship facing many residents.
In a statement issued on Wednesday by the State Publicity Secretary, Hon. Ikaebimo Mark, the party said Bayelsans were grappling with hunger, poverty and unemployment while the government was spending public resources on anniversary activities.
The PDP also faulted the continued non-completion of the Bayelsa Tower Hotel in Yenagoa, describing the project as a symbol of government’s failure to complete abandoned projects.
The party noted that the hotel project had remained uncompleted for about 22 years despite the public resources committed to it.
According to the PDP, the continued neglect of the Tower Hotel and other abandoned projects, alongside spending on elaborate celebrations, raises questions about the government’s priorities.
“At 30, Bayelsa deserves more than pomp and pageantry; it deserves accountability, completed projects, jobs, economic opportunities and a government that prioritises the welfare of its people,” the statement said.
The opposition party urged the state government to redirect its attention and resources towards projects and programmes capable of improving the living conditions of residents.
It called on the government to reflect on the economic realities confronting ordinary Bayelsans and prioritise their welfare over what it described as extravagant celebrations.
