Delta NDC gov campaign council seeks transparency in food bank programme

The Chris Iyovwaye Governorship Campaign Organisation of the Nigeria Democratic Congress in Delta State has called for greater transparency in the state’s food bank programme, demanding details of its funding, beneficiary selection process and distribution records.

The organisation’s Director-General, Dr Alfred Mulade, in a statement on Thursday, said the public deserved clear information on the resources committed to the programme and how the assistance reached intended beneficiaries.

A report by Asaba Metro said the third edition of the programme was held in Asaba on October 14, 2026, with 2,500 women across the state’s 25 local government areas reportedly benefiting from the initiative.

The report also stated that each beneficiary received ₦50,000, amounting to ₦125m in cash support, while the food items distributed were valued at more than ₦100m.

Mulade urged the organisers to provide details of the programme’s funding sources, the criteria used to select beneficiaries and records showing the items and financial assistance delivered.

“Families facing hunger need timely support, but such interventions must also be transparent and accountable,” he said.

“The public should also be able to understand where the resources came from, how beneficiaries were selected and what was delivered.”

The campaign organisation also called for clarity on the valuation of the food items, urging the relevant authorities to make supporting records available for public scrutiny.

Mulade said transparency would help build public confidence in social intervention programmes and ensure that assistance reached vulnerable residents fairly.

He also questioned the long-term impact of the initiative, asking, “What happens after the food is consumed and the cash is spent?”

According to him, food assistance should be complemented by sustainable measures that improve livelihoods and reduce poverty.

“Deltans deserve assistance that reaches them fairly today and sustained investment that gives them greater economic security tomorrow,” he added.
