U-17 World Cup: Flamingos eye quarter-final place against Mexico
Nigeria’s U-17 women’s national team, the Flamingos, will face Mexico in the Round of 16 of the 2026 FIFA U-17 Women’s World Cup in Morocco on Thursday, as both sides battle for a place in the quarter-finals.
In a post obtained from FIFA’s website on Sunday, the encounter, scheduled to take place in Salé, will present a crucial test for the Nigerian side, who are determined to continue their campaign in the tournament.
The Flamingos secured their place in the knockout stage after finishing second in Group B, behind defending champions North Korea.
Mexico also finished second in Group F to advance to the Round of 16, setting up a meeting between two teams hoping to progress further in the competition.
The North American side confirmed their qualification with a 1-0 victory over Australia in their final group match on Sunday, with Citlalli Reyes scoring the decisive goal.
Mexico will approach the encounter with confidence, having won the bronze medal at the 2025 edition of the tournament.
However, Nigeria will be hoping to overcome the challenge and secure a place in the last eight as they pursue their ambitions at the global competition.
The Nigerian team will need to maintain the attacking quality they displayed in the group stage while ensuring defensive discipline against a Mexican side that has also shown its ability to deliver under pressure.
The Flamingos began their campaign with a 2-1 defeat to Poland before responding with a 2-0 victory over Puerto Rico. They then recorded an impressive 3-1 win over North Korea to finish the group stage with six points.
The victory over North Korea provided a significant boost for the Nigerian youngsters as they prepare for the knockout stage, where every match carries greater importance.
Mexico, meanwhile, will be looking to build on their 1-0 victory over Australia, secured through Reyes’ decisive strike. Their third-place finish at the 2025 tournament also underlines the challenge awaiting Nigeria.
With a quarter-final ticket at stake, coach Akeem Busari and his technical crew will be expected to prepare the team for Mexico’s strengths while encouraging the players to make the most of their scoring opportunities.
The Flamingos will hope to reproduce the determination and clinical finishing they showed against North Korea when both teams meet on Thursday.
Kick-off is scheduled for 3 p.m. local time at the Women’s Football Complex in Morocco, with the winner advancing to the quarter-finals of the competition.
